Lack of availability of performance 4-5 seater SEP for travel

Single-engine piston (SEP) aircraft that surpass the cross-country capabilities of a Cessna 172, 182, or Piper PA-28 Archer are scarce in club or charter environments (i.e., traveling >130kts at a decent endurance and useful load of a true 4 seater). Even when such SEPs are available, their use for travel is often highly restricted, typically requiring board approval in clubs or restrictive time slots in charter environments. If integrated into flight schools, glider towing, or similar operations, they are frequently booked or unavailable for extended trips, limiting their practicality for true cross-country flying and travel. Do the math—and factor in weather uncertainties—and you will quickly realize the slim odds of taking your family to the islands.

Many pilots lack perspective following their basic training. This is alarming to us as flight instructors. No continuous practical application of flying skills, not leaving the comfort zone and no further training—fundamental skills were are often not properly reinforced. Lack of proficiency is a contributing factor in over 80% of accidents in private aviation.

Owning an aircraft is generally far from cost-effective. The high fixed costs associated with mandatory service intervals, insurance, hangar fees, and time-before-overhaul (TBO) requirements make ownership uneconomical for low utilization rates. Additionally, aircraft ownership or partial ownership involves significant administrative effort, including scheduling maintenance, coordinating repairs, handling regulatory compliance, and managing operational logistics.
